“The Jewish person was created to possess sovereignty over the angels.” (Likutey Halakhot, Rabbi Nathan of Breslov)
Who are we, really? Rabbi Nathan offers a breathtaking answer: the Jewish person was created to possess sovereignty over the angels. Not because of strength or wisdom, but because of a unique potential — the ability to unite heaven and earth through the fulfillment of the Torah and the mitzvot.
Angels are pure spirit. They sing, they obey, but they cannot grow, fall, or rise. The human being, however, is made of soul and matter, of struggle and choice. And it is precisely this capacity to choose — to sanctify the physical — that places him above the angels.
When a Jew performs a mitzvah in this physical world, he draws forth a light that even the seraphim cannot reach. This is the hidden dignity of Israel: a silent, immense kingship — one that even the heavenly forces revere.
